I operate 100 watts from my home in NYC but from May to October I spend time on a tiny island off the coast of CT - the Thimble Islands. And it's from there that I operate battery powered QRP. We have no electricity - so that's why the batteries. My best results were with a 4BTV vertical stuck on a piece of rebar that was jutting out of the rock. So being surrounded by salt water really helps the signals get out. Two hurricanes put an end to any thought of erecting another vertical so this year I had a compromise antenna: An MFJ apartment antenna clamped onto a wooden balcony. I've operated with the Elecraft K1, the Ten Tec Scout, the KX1 by Elecraft and the Icom 703. Keeping my eye open for the radio I bring out next year.
